Born Francis O'Neill on 2 August 1899 (NSW BDM 17933/1899). He enlisted under age, when he was 17 years and 3 months, by overstating his age by two years.  He named Henry James (sic) Farrell of Ourimbah Road, Mosman, whom he called a friend, as his next of kin.

He submitted a statutory declaration in January 1921 stating that he had assumed the surname O'Neill and that his correct name was Frank Wentworth Farrell. This was about the time of his first marriage.

He served with the 33rd Battalion and was wounded in action (gun shot wound, compound fracture right femur) on 4 April 1918.  At the time his battalion was in the front line at Villers-Bretonneux defending the approaches to Amiens from a German attack which included heavy artillery fire.  [JSB]
