Chrisopher Gordon enlisted in the AIF on 26 July 1915.  He was taken on strength by the 3rd Battalion, then in Egypt, in February 1916.  The battalion arrived in Marseilles, France on 28 March 1916.

He was wounded on 18 May 1916 when his battalion was in the front line at Fromelles, France.  He received hospital treatment, for gunshot wounds to his back and left buttock, and convalesced in France before returning to his unit in August 1916.

He was again wounded on 15 April 1917 at Havrincourt, France, resulting in a compound fracture of his shattered right elbow.  He was sent to Norwich, England for treatment.  The damage to his elbow was so severe that his right arm was amputated above the elbow.
