Vincent Cannon Dalziel enlisted on 13 September 1915 and was allocated to the 13th Field Company Engineers on 16 March 1916. He was wounded at Pozieres on 23 July 1916. He was again wounded at Zonnebeke (Battle of Polygon Wood) on 26 September 1917.
He was awarded a Military Medal for his actions on that day. The recommendation for the Medal Medal being based on the following:
During the operations near Zonnebeke on 26th Sept. 1917, this N.C.O. was in charge of a party of detailed to lay a tape track from Bde. H'Qtrs., to the front line, a distance of 3000 yds. over heavily shelled ground, the last 1,300 yds. being in full view of enemy snipers and machine guns. The tape was laid speedily reaching the front line approximately an hour after its capture from the enemy, and thus giving great assistanc to the runners and Stretch Bearers ETC. Great coolness and judgement was needed fo the location of the track. This N.C.O. appeared to disregard all danger setting a splendid example to those with him and the many passing him at work.
He was discharged from the AIF on 15 October 1917 and joined the Royal Naval Reserve as a Sub-Lieutenant.
He is the brother of Garnet Cannon Dalziel.
