Born: 1 January 1891

Died on service.

A letter written on 7 November 1915 by Trooper Harold Joseph Ausburn (6th Australian Light Horse Regiment) says that Harold Hume Pye was killed in a charge on 26 April 1915, the day after the landing at Gallipoli (Nepean Times, 8 January 1916, p8).  It is not clear whether the letter or the newspaper editior included the fact that it was the day after the landing.

The information reported from the letter relates to men from the Penrith district.  The 6th Light Horse did not land at Anzac Cove until 20 May 1915.   Trooper Ausburn must have received the information from one of those men who may have received it second hand.

The Commonwealth War Graves Commission gives Harold Pye's date of death as 27 April 1915.  His file from the National Archives also has him killed in action on 27 April 1915.  [JSB]
