He enlisted in the AIF in February 1916. After training in New South Wales, he departed for England in August 1916, arriving at Plymouth, Devon on 13 October 1916. After further training in England he joined the 17th Battalion in France on 25 December 1916. His unit was in the line at Grevillers, just west of Bapaume, when he was severely wounded in his upper right arm. He subsequently returned to Australia in early 1918 and was discharged from the AIF on 20 April 1918. His family moved to Mosman from Burwood around 1910 before moving to Epping close to the time of his enlistment in the AIF in 1916 (Sands Directory, various years). [JSB]
