A farm hand who enlisted in the AIF on 14 September 1914, aged 16. He embarked for Egypt on 22 December 1914.

He joined the 6th Light Horse Regiment as a reinforcement at Gallipoli in May 1915. He was medically evacuated to Egypt in July and returned on 2 October then remained there until the withdrawal to Egypt in December 1915.

He was transferred to the 15th Field Artillery Brigade on 27 March 1916. He arrived at Marseilles, France on 24 June 1916 and immediately moved to northern France. He was transferred to the 14th Field Artillery Brigade on 6 February 1917. He was wounded (gassed) in action on 3 October 1917 near Ypres, Belgium and evacuated to England for treatment and convalescence.

He remained in England until he embarked for Australia for "1914 Leave" on 20 October 1918 and arrived on 19 December 1918 then was discharged from the AIF on 20 February 1919.

After the war, he adopted the name Lawrence Alfred Kellaway. [JSB]
