A bank clerk who enlisted in the AIF on 13 June 1915. He embarked for Egypt with the 19th Battalion on 25 June and arrived on 23 July 1915.

The battalion landed at Gallipoli on 21 August and withdrew on 19 December 1915 to Lemnos, Greece and returned to Egypt on 7 January 1916. There are newspaper reports that he suffered a shrapnel wound to his scalp and remained on duty but this is not in his records.

The battalion arrived Marseilles, France on 25 March 1916 and then moved to northern France. He was wounded (right buttock) in action at Pozieres, France on 25 August 1916 and evacuated to England for treatment and convalescence.

Following his recovery he was transferred in March 1917 to the 61st Battalion which had been formed in England. This was disbanded in September and he was transferred back to the 19th Battalion which he rejoined at Hollebeke, Belgium on 20 November 1917.

He was wounded (right thigh) in action on 3 October 1918 when the battalion was attacking the German Beaurevoir Line near Estrees, France. He was among the 110 men from his unit who were wounded that day along with eight killed. It was to be the last action by the battalion which was withdrawn three days later and then absorbed into other battalions of the 5th Brigade on 10 October 1918.

Following treatment and convalescence in England he embarked for Australia on 16 January and arrived on 2 March then was discharged from the AIF on 28 April 1919. [JSB]
