The name D G Evans appears on the western face of the Mosman War Memorial. George Franki was unable to identify this person when compiling his Their Name Liveth for Evermore — Mosman’s Dead in the Great War 1914-1918. (Note that the name appears as D C Evans in Franki.)
Daniel George Evans enlisted in the AIF in June 1916. He served with the 19th Battalion and was killed in action on 9 October 1917 near Broodseinde, which is between Zonnebeke and Passchendaele, Belgium, during an action leading up to the First Battle of Passchendaele a few days later. His body was not recovered for burial in a military cemetery although he had been buried at a known location. He is among the missing commemorated at the Menin Gate.
Daniel married Eva Pearl Markham (known as Pearl) of Liverpool, NSW between enlisting and his departure from Australia in October 1916. Pearl remarried in 1919 to Archibald Fullerton Wooley who was a permanent member of the Australian Army in the Royal Australian Engineers and who had joined the AIF in August 1914 and returned to Australia in January 1919.
He resumed his Army service and it seems that he was posted to the Engineers at the fortifications at Middle Head as his name appears in the Sands Directory in the early 1920s as resident at Ballantyne Street, Mosman. He was later a member of the Australian Instructional Corps and served in a number of postings elsewhere.
It is likely that Pearl put forward Daniel George Evans' name for inclusion on the Mosman War Memorial although he had no prior connection with Mosman. [JSB]
