Enlisted in Brisbane in November 1915. Initially allocated to the 14th Australian Light Horse Regiment but allotted to the 52nd Battalion on arrival in France. He was wounded in action in August 1917. He departed England in January 1918 to return to Australia. In September 1918, he was discharged at Sydney as medically unfit.
